Casey McKinnon

Back in 2005, Casey was running a successful blog and wanted to do something to set her site apart from others. When she read a Wired article about podcasting, she went on to create her first show Kitkast with Rudy and, because of the recent announcement of the first iPod made to support video, shot to the top of the iTunes podcasting charts.

She believes the reason her first shows garnered such a large audience was her early adoption of new distribution platforms and not from posting stuff on Twitter, Facebook or YouTube. “When my show Galacticast hit its’ peak in 2007, I uploaded it to at least seven different sites,” she said.

The more places you post, the more opportunity it has to get seen, build a fanbase, and build revenue. Don’t knock a site before trying it; see what you can do to have your work featured on that site!

Recently she’s been working on keeping in contact with her audience on social networking sites and focusing on her acting, doing guest appearances in several shows and auditioning for television roles in Canada. “My goal in life is to act in a cult science fiction show and I’m pursuing that dream on whatever distribution platform I can.” McKinnon said.

As an early member of the IAWTV, Casey wanted to be part of an organization that would work to assist other web creators as well as other actors. “My fellow actors can benefit greatly from the IAWTV by learning how to be their own writers and producers or by gaining exposure through networking events and Bernie Su’s famous Writer’s Group where they can participate in cold readings of other members’ projects.” she said.

And as the IAWTV has expanded she also hopes to see it take on some of the bigger political issues that affect the industry, such as the recent debate over the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA).

You can stay up to date on Casey’s latest happenings at her official website: http://caseymckinnon.com
